The
Hexanon 105mm is a unique lens in the Hexanon lineup, because it has no focusing
mechanism. It is intended to be used with a bellows. In the absence of a
bellows, this lens can also be used on the special Auto Helicoid – basically
an adjustable extension ring without optical elements but with a focusing ring.
With its aid, the Hexanon 105mm can be focused from 60cm to infinity. The
great distance form the film plane at which the Hexanon 105mm is meant to be used
required a special optical formula thanks to which that lens produces very
sharp, contrasty flat-field images.

The
Auto Helicoid is little more than an extension ring whose length can be
adjusted by means of a focusing ring. It contains no optical elements and it
is meant to be used above all with the Hexanon 105, a macro lens devoid of
focusing mechanism. But it can also be used with various other lenses in
close and very close-range photography. The length of the Auto Helicoid
varies from 46mm to 71mm. The extensible portion of the helicoid’s barrel
carries magnification scales for the various lenses that may be used on it. The
attainable magnification ratios are: - 1.34 to 1.9 with a 35mm lens; 0.94 to 1.3 with a 50mm lens; 0.85 to
1.25 with a 55mm lens; 0.82 to 1.18 with a 57mm lens; 0.55 to 0.8 with a 85mm
lens; 0.47 to 0.69 with a 100mm lens; 0.35 to 0.51 with a 135mm lens. A
similar magnification chart for different focal lengths is engraved on the
barrel of the Auto Helicoid. Additional magnification can be obtained by
using the focusing ring of the Auto Helicoid in conjunction with that of the
lens mounted on it. The Auto Helicoid was only offered for a couple of years
and is extremely rare.
